Inability to completely evacuate the bowels or passing very hard stools is known as Constipation. Although constipation is often looked upon as a common problem, if not treated or if Constipation treatment is delayed, it can lead to further problems such as fissures, fistulas, piles, lack of appetite and indigestion. In Ayurveda, constipation is compared to Vibandha. The main reason for vibandha is disturbed agni or digestive fire which leads to production of Aama or undigested food. This causes obstruction in Annavaha strotas or digestive channel leading to further vitiation of Vata dosha. Vata dosha causes dryness in the tract and causes hard stools leading to constipation. There are a set of symptoms that help standardise the diagnosis of constipation .These criteria help physicians to better define constipation in a standardised manner. Bristol stool chart is as follows:- Type 1: Separate hard lumps, like nuts (hard to pass); also known as goat faeces - SEVERE CONSTIPATION Type 2: Sausage-shaped, but lumpy - MILD CONSTIPATION Type 3: Like a sausage but with cracks on its surface - NORMAL Type 4: Like a sausage or snake, smooth and soft - NORMAL Type 5: Soft blobs with clear cut edges (easy to pass) - LACKING FIBER Type 6: Fluffy pieces with ragged edges, a mushy stool - MILD DIARRHOEA Type 7: Watery, no solid pieces, entirely liquid - SEVERE DIARRHOEA Ayurveda has advocated Mala Parikshan. If the stools are floating in the water they are normal but if they get submerged, they are made up of Aama or undigested food. Causes: • Incorrect food habits • Excessive intake of refined flour (Maida) in the form of bread, biscuits, cakes, toasts etc • Excessive intake of aerated drinks • Lack of fiber in food • Poor intake of water • Sedentary lifestyle • Controlling the urge to pass stools or gases. Allergic Rhinitis Allergic Rhinitis or commonly called as allergic cold is reaction of our body to a particular allergen which your body is sensitive to. These allergens could be small dust particle, pet hair, molds, pollen, smoke particles etc. The inner lining of the nose comes in contact with the allergens, gets inflamed and starts reacting with it. Our immune system produces a certain chemical called as histamine. Histamines start the process that hustles those allergens out of your body. This causes sneezing which helps in throwing those allergens out of the nasal passage. Another defense mechanism of our body is secretion of watery mucus to prevent the entry of allergens in our respiratory tract. According to Ayurveda, Allergic Rhinitis can be compared to Vataj Pratishyay (Vataj type of cold). Chronic allergic Rhinitis can be compared to Vata-Kaphaj type of pratishyay. Improper digestion leads to formation of Ama, which disturbs the formation of Rasa dhatu leading to manifestation of Pratishyay. Causes: • Wrong food combinations or Virruddha aahar like milk with sour and salty foods, honey and ghee in equal quantities, fish with milk, ice creams after night meals etc. • Drinking water while sleeping • Drinking water immediately after exposure to sun • Swimming immediately after coming from sun • Eating cold foodstuffs like ice creams, or things kept in refrigerator • Curd, sweets, cakes, pastries, chocolates etc • Seasonal changes Symptoms: • Extensive sneezing (mostly early morning) • Blocked and congested nose • Watery discharge from nose • Itching or irritation in Nose, throat and eyes • Fever • Cough • Tears in eyes Treatment: Ayurveda provides a holistic approach in treatment of allergic conditions like these. Panchkarma treatment provides Purification and cleansing of the system therby removing all the doshas responsible. 1. Vamana: Therapeutic emesis is given according to the condition of patient. Vamana removes all the accumulated Kapha in the chest, and upper respiratory tract. 2. Nasyam: Few drops of specially prepared Ayurveda herbal oils are instilled in the nostrils of the patient for 7-14 days continuously. This clears the sinuses, and improves the immunity of the respiratory tract. After Panchakarma treatment, Ayurvedic medicines are administered to improve respiratory immunity and strength of upper respiratory tract, and also improve digestion.
Diabetes & Ayurveda Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic insufficiencies in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar) for a considerable period either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond to the available insulin adequately, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will typically experience A) Frequent Urination (Poly-uria) B) Increased Thirst (Poly-Dipsia) C) Increased Hunger (Poly-Phagia) Diabetes in general term is referred as “Prameha” in Ayurveda. However Ayurveda further elaborates Prameha based on 3 main types and 20 Sub types. Chronic Diabetes Mellitus can be broadly referred as Madhumeha based on the presenting symptoms and associated complications. According to Ayurveda the following are the causes of Prameha. • Lack of Exercise • Sedentary lifestyle • Excessive intake of Milk and Milk products like Paneer, Cheese , Curd etc • Excessive intake of Meat, Fish etc Prameha is mainly caused due to vitiation of Kapha dosha (from above reasons) leading to derangement of Pitta and Vata as well. Also increase in Kapha dosha causes increase in Kleda (Aqueous) and Meda (Fat) in our body. Due to which there is increase in frequency of urination (kleda is excreted out by urine) and obesity (Meda). Symptoms of Diabetes: ● Blurry Vision ● Skin Infections ● Burning of palms and soles ● Increased hunger ● Excessive Thirst ● Sweet taste to mouth etc. ● Wounds that take time to heal ● Unexplained extreme fatigue ● Excessive urine formation and frequent urination Treatment: Ayurvedic line of treatment iscustom-made based on individual’s constitution and considering the Prakriti of patient with Dosha predominance. Other factors like hereditary, food habits etc. are also considered to prepare a specific line of treatment. Usually, Type1 Diabetes patients or Insulin dependent Diabetes is advised “Bruhana”(Body building)medication and diet to increase dhatus in body. Panchakarma is not advised to such patients. Diet is also considered as a kind of medicine in Ayurveda as each food has certain qualities to affect the doshas in certain ways. In Type 2 Diabetes, Purification of body or Shodhana is advised by Panchakarma method depending on predominance of doshas. E.g. patients with Kapha dosha are advised Vamana(emetics) and patients with Pitta dosha are advised Virechana (purgation) Panchakarma treatment and those with Vata predominace are advises Basti (Enema). Internal medicines also play an integral part. Ayurvedic medicines not only lower down the blood glucose level but also improve our metabolism making muscles more receptive towards glucose. These medicines if taken regularly lower down the doses of Allopathic medicines to a greater extent thereby reducing side effects of those medicines. However proper thought and in-depth analysis of the patient’s body constitution has to be analyzed before deciding upon the treatment regimen. Dietary changes are advised according to the prakriti of the patient. Exercises are a must for the patients of diabetes as exercising improves absorption of glucose by muscles. External therapies like Udwartanam, Abhyangam, Pinda sweda are carried out in various complications of diabetes. The above literature is provided for educational purposes and not for self –medication. Kindly consult the Ayurveda consultant for any additional information.

What is Dermatitia or Eczema? Dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a group of diseases that results in inflammation of the skin. These diseases are characterized by itchiness, red skin and a rash. In cases of short duration, there may be small blisters, while in long-term cases the skin may become thickened. The area of skin involved can vary from small to the entire body. What Are The Types of Dermatitis Or Eczema? There are several types of dermatitis such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and xerotic dermatitis. Each type has specific symptoms; however, there are certain signs that are common for all of them, including redness of the skin, swelling, itching and skin lesions with sometimes oozing and scarring. 1. Atopic Dermatitis This is an allergic disease believed to have a hereditary component, and often runs in families. While the condition may occur at any age, it typically starts in childhood with changing severity over the years. Itchy rash is particularly noticeable on head and scalp, neck, inside of elbows, behind knees, and buttocks. 2. Contact Dermatitis Contact dermatitis can be of two types, allergic or Irritant. Allergic dermatitis results from a delayed reaction to an allergen, such as nickel, copper etc. Irritant dermatitis results from direct reaction to a detergent, such as sodium lauryl sulphate. 3. Xerotic Eczema Caused due to excessive dryness to skin, xerotic Eczema worsens in dry winter weather. It mainly affects limbs and trunks. The itchy, tender skin resembles a dry, cracked, river bed. This disorder is very common among the older population. 4. Seborrhoeic Dermatitis A condition sometimes classified as a form of Eczema that is closely related to dandruff. It causes dry or greasy peeling of the scalp, eyebrows, and face, and sometimes trunk. Ayurveda describes Eczema as “ Vicharchika”. It is caused due to vitiation of all the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This vitiation makes the Rakta or Blood impure and hence the disease. The main reasons for this vitiation are as follows: • Viruddha Aahar or faulty combination of food stuffs • Excessive intake of spicy, salty food • Stress • Faulty lifestyle Symptoms: • Common symptoms of all types of dermatitis • Red rashes on skin • Swelling • Dryness and itching • Skin lesions with oozing and scarring • Thickening of skin • Discoloration of skin Treatment: Ayurvedic treatment for Eczema at Ved clinic is a combination of Panchakarma therapy (Detoxification) and internal medicine. 1.
