What is Dermatitia or Eczema? Dermatitis, also known as eczema, is a group of diseases that results in inflammation of the skin. These diseases are characterized by itchiness, red skin and a rash. In cases of short duration, there may be small blisters, while in long-term cases the skin may become thickened. The area of skin involved can vary from small to the entire body. What Are The Types of Dermatitis Or Eczema? There are several types of dermatitis such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and xerotic dermatitis. Each type has specific symptoms; however, there are certain signs that are common for all of them, including redness of the skin, swelling, itching and skin lesions with sometimes oozing and scarring. 1. Atopic Dermatitis This is an allergic disease believed to have a hereditary component, and often runs in families. While the condition may occur at any age, it typically starts in childhood with changing severity over the years. Itchy rash is particularly noticeable on head and scalp, neck, inside of elbows, behind knees, and buttocks. 2. Contact Dermatitis Contact dermatitis can be of two types, allergic or Irritant. Allergic dermatitis results from a delayed reaction to an allergen, such as nickel, copper etc. Irritant dermatitis results from direct reaction to a detergent, such as sodium lauryl sulphate. 3. Xerotic Eczema Caused due to excessive dryness to skin, xerotic Eczema worsens in dry winter weather. It mainly affects limbs and trunks. The itchy, tender skin resembles a dry, cracked, river bed. This disorder is very common among the older population. 4. Seborrhoeic Dermatitis A condition sometimes classified as a form of Eczema that is closely related to dandruff. It causes dry or greasy peeling of the scalp, eyebrows, and face, and sometimes trunk. Ayurveda describes Eczema as “ Vicharchika”. It is caused due to vitiation of all the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This vitiation makes the Rakta or Blood impure and hence the disease. The main reasons for this vitiation are as follows: • Viruddha Aahar or faulty combination of food stuffs • Excessive intake of spicy, salty food • Stress • Faulty lifestyle Symptoms: • Common symptoms of all types of dermatitis • Red rashes on skin • Swelling • Dryness and itching • Skin lesions with oozing and scarring • Thickening of skin • Discoloration of skin Treatment: Ayurvedic treatment for Eczema at Ved clinic is a combination of Panchakarma therapy (Detoxification) and internal medicine. 1. Internal medicines in the form of Ghritams(medicated ghee), Kashayams, tablets to pacify the doshas . Ayurvedic medicines for Blood Purification are also given. 3. Takradhara & Kashaydhara: Takra (buttermilk)or Kashayam made with herbs like Neem, Haridra, aaragwada etc, which are helpful in skin disorders is poured over the body or affected areas. 4. Shirodhara is done to relieve the stress. 5. Dietary changes are advised 6. Lifestyle modifications. 7. Permanent cure for Eczema by Ayurveda is done by giving Rasayan chikitsa.
ACNE /PIMPLES Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples, especially on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms. Whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules are all types of acne. Causes: Your skin has tiny holes called pores which can become blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. When this occurs, you may develop a pimple or “zit.” If your skin is repeatedly affected by this condition, you may have acne. However there are many causes of getting acne like, • Pollution • Stress • Faulty lifestyle like late night sleeping or night shifts, excessive use of cosmetics etc • Faulty Dietary habits like excessive intake of fatty foodstuffs like chocolates, cakes etc • Hormonal changes • Certain medication like steroids, birth control pills etc Ayurvedic view: Ayurveda refers acne as “Yuvanpidaka”. Yuvan means adolescents and pidaka means pustules or papules. The primary cause is impairment of all the three doshas, predominantly the pitta and kapha dosha, which further vitiates the rakta and meda dhatus (blood and fat tissues). According to predominance of doshas acne are classifies as Vataj, Pittaj & Kaphaj types. Small blackish acne are of Vataj types. Big, red swllen papules are of pittaj type. Big, pus filled acne are of Kaphaj type. Symptoms: • Whiteheads • Blackheads • Pimples Treatment: Allopathic treatment includes anti-inflammatory medicines, vitamin A derivatives, Antibiotics and local antiseptic creams. However ayurvedic treatment is holistic. Because acne is deep-rooted, use of local creams, antibiotics and lotions only masks the symptoms. Ayurvedic treatment includes: 1. Detoxification or Panchakarma treatment. Vaman or therapeutic Vomitting is induced to get rid of excessive Kapha dosha. Virechana or therapeutic purgation (loose motions) is given to remove excessive pitta dosha from the body. 2. Internal medicines to remove rakta dushti.(blood purification). 3. Local lepa application to prevent scarring and black marks. 4. Dietary changes 5. Lifestyle changes. All the treatments should be carried under strict medical supervision only. Varsha-rutu(Monsoon) & Ayurveda The aroma emitting from the soil , the tiny droplets hanging on to leaves, the thundering sound of the rain, and the wind in the air… Yes we are talking about Monsoon or Varsha Rutu. Monsoon not only brings changes in Mother Nature but also in our body. Vata, Pitta, Kapha are the 3 vital forces which regulate our body. Vata is responsible for conduction of the nervous system, blood circulation, musculo-skeletal movements of our body and also elimination of waste products from our body. Pitta regulates the digestion and metabolism in our body. Kapha governs the mucous secretion and lubrication of our joints. The atmospheric changes in Monsoon or specifically Varsha rutu lead to vitiation of Vata in our body. Also there is increase in the Amlata or acidity in the nature and hence in our body. This results in diminished bio-digestive fire (Agni). Vitiated Vata along with reduced Agni results in imbalance leading to diseases. Following are the diseases caused to vitiated vata. • Gastric upset in the form of gases, Abdominal bloating, loss of appetite, constipation • Chronic constipation leads to Piles and fissures in anal region. • Muscular pain and body ache. • Knee pain (Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis) • Low back pain (Lumbar Spondylosis, PID, Sciatica) • Neck pain (Cervical Spondylitis) • Menstrual abnormalities like Dysmenorrhea, Irregular menses, Scanty menses, PCOD, Fibroids etc • Paralysis and other degenerative changes related to Nervous system. • Skin ailments like Psoriasis, Dry skin etc. These growing incidences of ailments due to accumulated vata and disturbed Agni needs to be pacified with intake of medicines, proper diet and lifestyle modification. The excessive doshas should be eliminated through the body (detoxification) with the help of Panchakarma. Ayurveda texts recommend specific Shodhan therapy (detox program) as per the season for everybody. This is a part of Rutucharya (Seasonal regime) – • Vaman(Clinically induced emesis)in Vasant rutu. • Virechan(Purgation therapy) and Raktamokshan(Bloodletting) in Sharad rutu. • Similarly Basti in Varsha rutu . Basti in Monsoon is advised not only for diseased but also for healthy people so that they remain healthy. Importance of Basti – Acharyas describe “Basti is half of the medicinal therapy, or even the complete treatment.” Charak- Sid. Ch. 1 verse 39 As per Ayurveda the intestines are the main seat of Vata in our body. Also modern science says that rectal route is the fastest route for drug administration. So any medicine given through intestines will get absorbed quickly. So Basti given through intestines will act as a corrective measure for the vitiated Vata. There are 2 types of Basti which are given. 1. Anuvasan basti or Sneha Basti – Oil Enema 2. Kashaya Basti – Decoction or Kadha Basti. These are given in alternate manner or in a specific order (as decided by the Ayurvedic Physician) for 8, 15 or 30 days depending upon the Patient and severity of Vitiated Vata. So, Stay healthy and rejuvenated this monsoon with benefits of Ayurveda. Please inbox us for any further information.

Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word that means “five actions” or “five treatments”. This is a process used to clean the body of excess doshas which can cause or are causing diseases. Normally the body has the ability to efficiently process and remove these vitiated doshas. However, due to faulty diet patterns & lifestyle, the digestive enzymes and agnis which regulate the body’s internal metabolism become disorganized. This can lead to the accumulation and spread of toxins (vitiated doshas) throughout the body resulting in disease. Panchakarma will remove the excess doshas and correct imbalances in them out of your system through the body’s own organs and channels of elimination (colon, sweat glands, lungs, bladder, urinary tract, stomach, intestines, etc). Panchakarma purifies the tissues at a very deep level. Panchakarma not only helps in treating the diseases but also helps in preventing them. Panchakarma is a five-fold therapy; it is highly individualized based on the needs of the individual depending on the Ayurvedic constitutional type, doshic imbalances, age, digestive strength, immune status, and many other factors. Depending on each individual’s needs, all or only parts of the five therapies are utilized. 5 treatments: 1. Vamana 2. Virechana 3. Basti 4. Nasya 5. Raktamokshana Vamana: Vaman starts with oral intake of medicated ghee in ascending doses for a period of 3 to 7 days and includes a full body Abhyangam massage. This continues for a few days and ends with therapeutic vomiting. Benefits: Ayurvedic Vaman treatment is meant for purification of the upper digestive tract. It is beneficial in management of Kapha predominant disorders such as asthma, cough and Psoriasis. Virechana: Virechana starts with oral intake of medicated ghee in ascending doses for a period of 3 to 7 days and includes a full body Abhyangam massage. This continues for a few days and ends with therapeutic purgation or loose motions. Benefits: Virechanam helps to get rid of Pitta toxins from the body that get accumulated in the liver and gallbladder. It is extremely beneficial in management of Pitta disorders such as dermatitis, skin diseases chronic fever, heartburn, jaundice, etc. Basti: Vasti is an important part of “Panchkarma”. Basti refers to enema, which is administration of medication through anal route. Sneha basti: Administration of medicated oil or ghee in the form of enema. Kashaya Basti: Administration of medicated kadha or kashayam in the form of enema. Benefits: Helpful in Vata related disorders like Pain in joints, neurological disorders, constipation, flatulence or gas troubles, lower backaches, gout and Rheumatism. Hypothyroidism : Hypothyroidism is a clinical condition which results due to inadequate production of thyroid hormones for prolonged periods or resistance of the peripheral (body) tissues to the effects of thyroid hormones. According to Ayurveda, Thyroid gland is primarily under activity of Agni ( Bio-Digestive fire) of our body. Agni at cellular level is inhibited by multiple reasons leading to diminished metabolism in the body leading to Hypothyroidism. As multiple systems are involved in the impairment related organs also show diminished functions in this condition. A subdued Kapha under the influence of vitiated vata is primarily responsible for impaired body functions. Common Symptoms :  Fatigue  Weakness  Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight  Coarse, dry hair  Dry, rough pale skin  Hair loss  Cold intolerance (you can't tolerate cold temperatures like those around you)  Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches  Constipation  Depression  Irritability  Memory loss  Abnormal menstrual cycles  Decreased libido Treatment: Ayurveda provides a holistic approach in treating Hypothyroidism. Ayurveda aims at detoxifying the body at the tissue level in the form of Shodhana which is done through Panchakarma. Following Panchakarma procedures are carried out in Hypothyroid Patients. 1. Vaman: A therapeutically induced vomiting capable to clear all blocked body channel which is primarily indicated for diseases especially in the Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) region. The subdued Kapha dosha is responsible for slowing down of the metabolic activity in the body. Vaman removes the excess Kapha from the body thereby clearing the obstructed hormonal axis. Also Thyroid gland is located in the neck, which is the prime site for Kapha dosha. 2. Virechan: In this loose motions are induced to clear all the blocked channels. However Virechan is more helpful in fluffiness of the body which is developed by the vitiated Vata and Kapha. 3. Nasya: Nasya is instillation of specifically prepared herbal oils in the nostrils in specific quantities. It helps clear the excess kapha accumulated along the hypothalamus pituitary Thyroid axis as it is mentioned in Ayurveda – “Nasa (Nose) is the entrance for head”. Any disease related to upper part of chest can be effectively managed with the help of Nasya. External therapies like Shirodhara, Takradhara, Udwartanam, Shiro Lepam, are also carried out according to the symptoms of Patient. Along with the detoxification procedures internal medicines are also given to rectify the vitiated Vata and Kapha. The medicines are in the form of Herbal Decoctions (KADHA), tablets, and some tried and tested churnaas (fine powders). Dietary advice to regulate the bodily doshas is also an essential part of treatment. Request you to consult the ayurveda physician for an in-depth body (Prakriti) analysis and precautions to be undertaken.
