Diabetes & Ayurveda Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic insufficiencies in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar) for a considerable period either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond to the available insulin adequately, or both. Patients with high blood sugar will typically experience A) Frequent Urination (Poly-uria) B) Increased Thirst (Poly-Dipsia) C) Increased Hunger (Poly-Phagia) Diabetes in general term is referred as “Prameha” in Ayurveda. However Ayurveda further elaborates Prameha based on 3 main types and 20 Sub types. Chronic Diabetes Mellitus can be broadly referred as Madhumeha based on the presenting symptoms and associated complications. According to Ayurveda the following are the causes of Prameha. • Lack of Exercise • Sedentary lifestyle • Excessive intake of Milk and Milk products like Paneer, Cheese , Curd etc • Excessive intake of Meat, Fish etc Prameha is mainly caused due to vitiation of Kapha dosha (from above reasons) leading to derangement of Pitta and Vata as well. Also increase in Kapha dosha causes increase in Kleda (Aqueous) and Meda (Fat) in our body. Due to which there is increase in frequency of urination (kleda is excreted out by urine) and obesity (Meda). Symptoms of Diabetes: ● Blurry Vision ● Skin Infections ● Burning of palms and soles ● Increased hunger ● Excessive Thirst ● Sweet taste to mouth etc. ● Wounds that take time to heal ● Unexplained extreme fatigue ● Excessive urine formation and frequent urination Treatment: Ayurvedic line of treatment iscustom-made based on individual’s constitution and considering the Prakriti of patient with Dosha predominance. Other factors like hereditary, food habits etc. are also considered to prepare a specific line of treatment. Usually, Type1 Diabetes patients or Insulin dependent Diabetes is advised “Bruhana”(Body building)medication and diet to increase dhatus in body. Panchakarma is not advised to such patients. Diet is also considered as a kind of medicine in Ayurveda as each food has certain qualities to affect the doshas in certain ways. In Type 2 Diabetes, Purification of body or Shodhana is advised by Panchakarma method depending on predominance of doshas. E.g. patients with Kapha dosha are advised Vamana(emetics) and patients with Pitta dosha are advised Virechana (purgation) Panchakarma treatment and those with Vata predominace are advises Basti (Enema). Internal medicines also play an integral part. Ayurvedic medicines not only lower down the blood glucose level but also improve our metabolism making muscles more receptive towards glucose. These medicines if taken regularly lower down the doses of Allopathic medicines to a greater extent thereby reducing side effects of those medicines. However proper thought and in-depth analysis of the patient’s body constitution has to be analyzed before deciding upon the treatment regimen. Dietary changes are advised according to the prakriti of the patient. Exercises are a must for the patients of diabetes as exercising improves absorption of glucose by muscles. External therapies like Udwartanam, Abhyangam, Pinda sweda are carried out in various complications of diabetes. The above literature is provided for educational purposes and not for self –medication. Kindly consult the Ayurveda consultant for any additional information.
ACNE /PIMPLES Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples, especially on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms. Whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules are all types of acne. Causes: Your skin has tiny holes called pores which can become blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. When this occurs, you may develop a pimple or “zit.” If your skin is repeatedly affected by this condition, you may have acne. However there are many causes of getting acne like, • Pollution • Stress • Faulty lifestyle like late night sleeping or night shifts, excessive use of cosmetics etc • Faulty Dietary habits like excessive intake of fatty foodstuffs like chocolates, cakes etc • Hormonal changes • Certain medication like steroids, birth control pills etc Ayurvedic view: Ayurveda refers acne as “Yuvanpidaka”. Yuvan means adolescents and pidaka means pustules or papules. The primary cause is impairment of all the three doshas, predominantly the pitta and kapha dosha, which further vitiates the rakta and meda dhatus (blood and fat tissues). According to predominance of doshas acne are classifies as Vataj, Pittaj & Kaphaj types. Small blackish acne are of Vataj types. Big, red swllen papules are of pittaj type. Big, pus filled acne are of Kaphaj type. Symptoms: • Whiteheads • Blackheads • Pimples Treatment: Allopathic treatment includes anti-inflammatory medicines, vitamin A derivatives, Antibiotics and local antiseptic creams. However ayurvedic treatment is holistic. Because acne is deep-rooted, use of local creams, antibiotics and lotions only masks the symptoms. Ayurvedic treatment includes: 1. Detoxification or Panchakarma treatment. Vaman or therapeutic Vomitting is induced to get rid of excessive Kapha dosha. Virechana or therapeutic purgation (loose motions) is given to remove excessive pitta dosha from the body. 2. Internal medicines to remove rakta dushti.(blood purification). 3. Local lepa application to prevent scarring and black marks. 4. Dietary changes 5. Lifestyle changes. All the treatments should be carried under strict medical supervision only.
